Asylum is a permanent once granted. However, asylum status can be taken away.
Asylum status is a path to U.S. Citizenship.
As an asylee you are authorized to work in the United States. As an asylee you may be able to travel abroad.
Under U.S. federal immigration law, you are required to report any change of address to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) within ten (10) days of changing the address. You notify the DHS by filing the Form AR-11, which you can submit online or by mail. You are obligated to comply with this requirement until you become a naturalized United States Citizen. The form is available online at the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services website: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/form/ar-11.pdf. You should retain a copy of the form for your records. (An Important Tip: When completing the form: Your status is "asylee" and it does not expire.)
You are required to report all income earned in the United States to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and in most cases pay taxes and file federal and state income tax returns. You must comply with this requirement even if you are paid in cash or your employer does not deduct taxes from your wages. Failure to comply with this requirement may delay adjuration of your application for adjustment of status to lawful permanent residence. It may also be a reason to deny your application for naturalization to U.S. citizen. For more information on filing federal income tax returns visit the IRS website: https://www.irs.gov/
Please keep in mind that the United States government can seek to revoke your asylee status and seek to remove you from the country should you commit or be convicted of certain crimes. If you are arrested, you should consult with an immigration attorney on the possible consequences to your asylee status. In addition, your application for adjustment of status or naturalization may be delayed or denied because of tickets, arrests, and/or convictions, which may disqualify you from applying. We recommend that if you have ever been ticketed, fined, charged, and/or arrested, you consult with an immigration attorney before applying for an immigration benefit.
Selective Service requirements for males between the ages of 18 - 26 years you must register for the Selective Service. You can use the following link to register online or gain more information on the requirement: https://www.sss.gov/RegVer/wfRegistration.aspx. You will not be eligible for student financial loans if you do not register for the Selective Service and this will delay your application for naturalization.
