ASYLEE TRAVEL TO PUERTO RICO


OVERVIEW OF PUERTO RICO, 
A UNINCORPORATED TERRITORY OF THE UNITED STATES

Puerto Rico, the Spanish for "Rich Port" officially known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. In 1898, following the Spanish-American War, the United States acquired Puerto Rico under the terms of the Treaty of Paris. 

Puerto Ricans have been citizens of the United States since 1917, and enjoy freedom of movement between the island and the mainland. As Puerto Rico is not a state, Puerto Rico does not have a vote in the United States Congress, which governs the territory with full jurisdiction under the Puerto Rico Federal Relations Act of 1950.

LGBT people that lives in Puerto Rico have gained several rights in recent years. 

Same sex relationships have been legal in Puerto Rico since 2003, and same sex marriage and adoptions are also permitted.Federal U.S. hate crime laws apply in Puerto Rico

Are you an asylee travelling to Puerto Rico? You are required to present the following to get through the security check-point: 

- Your boarding pass, and 

- A government issued ID (Driver's License, State ID or U.S. Refugee Travel Document (Form I-571).*

It is fundamentally important to note, travel to Puerto Rico is considered a domestic flight and requires only a Driver's License or a State ID or a U.S. Refugee Travel Document (Form I-571)* because travelling to Puerto Rico is liking travelling to Nevada or Georgia. 


***Proof of residency for asylees are State ID, State Issued Driver's License and if you are an asylee with U.S> Permanent Residency then proof of your Alien Registration card (green card) which must be Form I-551. 

*PLEASE NOTE: Always travel with proof that you are  an asylee of the United States, there are sometimes random checks on domestic flights, you should be prepared to show documents that you are a legal asylee of the United States. The rules mentioned above are for travel travel to Puerto Rico.

APPLYING FOR A REFUGEE TRAVEL DOCUMENT (UNITED STATES)  If you want to travel internationally, You will need a passport. ASYLEES AND THE RIGHT TO WORK!

If you are an ASYLEE (ASYLUM GRANTED) , you do NOT   require an EAD, Employment Authorization Document to work in the United States.  Let's discuss the law, In the HANDBOOK FOR EMPLOYERS M-274 on USCIS, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services website SECTION 6.3 REFUGEES AND ASYLEES.  Refugees and asylees are AUTHORIZED   to work indefinitely because of their immigration status does not expire.  After being granted ASYLUM in the United States, The Department of Homeland Security issues a FORM I-94, ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE RECORD , to asylees. FORM I-94 will contain a stamp or natation such as "ASYLUM GRANTED INDEFINITELY" or the appropriate provision of the law (8 CFR 274.a.12(a)(5) or INA 208) to show their employment authorization. An ASYLEE can also present an electronic FORM I-94 with an admission "AY".  FORM I-94 is an acceptable LIST C document on the FORM I-9 and does not EXPIRE .
